Important note: The latest versions (> 2018.8.b.2) of the game are not compatible with these mods. I'm hoping to get the fix out for this by sometime mid-January, among other major update (support for MacOs/Linux). Stay tuned!

This is a collection of mods that improve the UX and add extra functionality to Cultist Simulator, mostly geared towards improving usability and keyboard control of the game.

🚀 ShiftPopulate

Reduce dragging significantly by empowering your shift+click!

There is a lot of dragging in cultist simulator which can really strain your wrists (and get tedious). This mod will enable you to instantly manipulate cards with shift+clicks.

When a situation/verb window is open, simply shift+click on a card and it will be automatically inserted into the first compatible slot.

When no situation window is open, shift+clicking on a card will open the closest situation window that can accept the card and insert it there.

Finally, shift+clicking on an empty slot will populate it with the closest card that fits (in case of ties, it will pick the closest top-left-most card).

Now you can move cards into slots without dragging, but what about removing them? Just press E for [E]ject. It will remove the right-most card from the slot and put it back into the last location the game remembered it being.

Together with the built-in [S]tart and [C]ollect shortcuts, shift+click and [E]ject will greatly reduce the amount of dragging required to play this game and make experimenting with lots of cards much smoother (and more fun!).

🔨 SituationAutomation

Automate repetitive tasks!

After ctrl+clicking on a situation (square token) it will be decorated with an anvil icon in the bottom right. It is now automated and will find cards, start tasks and collect the results automatically.

The automated situation token will grab cards within a small radius around it (starting from top to bottom, then left to right). It will insert these cards into as many empty slots as possible, then start the task, collect the results, and finally repeat it all over again.

Additionally: The automated situation will pause while the player has its window open or when the game is paused. Ctrl+click on the situation again to unautomate it. Note that this mod does not touch your save file, so ctrl+click on those tokens again after loading.

You can use this mod however you would like, but it's recommended to automate the simpler grindy tasks of the game (working, buying books) so you can focus your full attention on the exciting development your cult and exploration of your dreams.

Automating more complex tasks is definitely possible, but be mindful of the order in which the slots are populated and how the game handles returning cards back to the tabletop (which is reset each time you load the game).

An example showing the automation in action:

An example showing in which order the cards will be used:

👻 EscapeDismisses

Dismiss panels and windows by pressing escape.

Arguably the most useful button on your keyboard is escape, so why have it open the settings menu?

No more having to move your mouse all the way to the upper right corner of each window to hide it! This mod rebinds escape to close all information/notification panels and situation windows.

If any information or notification panels are open, those will be closed first. If those are all closed then the open situation window will be closed instead. (To open the settings menu use shift+esc).

SpeedChanger

Change the speed of the game to your liking.

This mod allows you to change the amount time that passes with each tick of the clock without messing up the speed of any other game elements.

To adjust the game speed: 1) Find your save file folder by going into the game options and clicking 'View Save File'. 2) In this folder open the file 'config.ini' in a text editor. 3) Append a new line with the text gamespeed=3.

Now the all the timers will run 3x times faster (effectively running at fast-forward speed by default). Of course you can change the multiplier to anything you want: 0.5 for half speed, 2 for double speed, or 20 for one wild ride.

💾 QuickSave

Save/load with F5/F9.

Not recommended for your first few games! But after several playthroughs you might decide you want to start playing with manual saves.

This mod puts save and load at your finger tips (F5 and F9 respectively). Each time it you save the autosave timer will also be reset, so the game will not immediately overwrite your save file right as your favorite cultists dies.

Installation

  • Install Partiality Launcher and patch the game. (Video Tutorial)
  • Download IlilimCultistSimulatorMods.zip and extract the dll files into [GAME_FOLDER]Mods.
  • Re-Launch Partiality Launcher and refresh the mods. Enable the mods your would like to use, but you must enable 0Harmony and IlilimModUtils for the other mods to work.
  • Apply the mods in Partiality Launcher.
  • Run the game and enjoy!

Feedback and issues

If you have any suggestions, contributions, or issues feel free to create a new issue or pull request on Github.

If you do encounter issues, add the line debug=1 to your config.ini file. (To find this file, go into the game options and click 'View Save File'. It will be in this folder.) Now run the game again and if you encounter any issues they will be logged to a file on your desktop called 'harmony.log.txt'. Reproduce the error you encountered again and include any logs here with your issue submission.

Cultist Simulator is a card-based simulation video game developed by British indie studio Weather Factory and published by Humble Bundle. It was released for Microsoft Windows, macOS and Linux computer systems in May 2018, with mobile versions developed by Playdigious released in April 2019.

Gameplay[edit]

Cultist Simulator is a narrative-driven simulation game that has the player take on the role of a citizen in a nameless society where their actions may lead to their creating a cultlike following. The game's mechanics are presented as a combination of cards and action buttons. Cards represent a range of different elements: persons, attributes like health or reason, emotions, locations, items, wealth, lore, and others. The player starts with two cards: a career and one health. To play, the player drops cards onto slots contained within the action buttons, then starts the action which triggers a timer. When complete, the player clicks the action, collecting played cards and additional rewards, which may be random or predetermined based on the action. The first action button is 'Work'; placing their career card on this earns the player 'Funds' cards.

As the game progresses, new action buttons can appear. Some of these are beneficial, adding more options that players can do, such as Study, Talk, Explore, or Dream. Other action buttons are a detriment to the player's progress. For example, players will eventually get an action button that reflects the passage of their character's time in the game, which will automatically consume wealth cards; should the player have no wealth cards when this action's timer completes, they will gain Hunger cards, which leads to a chain of cards and action buttons that can lead to the death of the character. Some cards, often generated by action buttons, also have timers attached, either which they will burn out, or may revert to a different card type. The game takes place in real-time, but the player has the option of pausing the game to review cards and actions, and to place or collect cards from the board. The game ultimately has many different parallel victory and failure conditions, both based on 'sane' and 'insane' routes that the player's character may uncover.[1]

Development[edit]

Weather Factory is an independent game studio created by Alexis Kennedy, who previously had founded Failbetter Games. Failbetter had developed several gothic and Lovecraftian horror story-driven games, including Fallen London. Kennedy split from Failbetter and founded Weather Factory in 2016, looking for a more hands-on role in designing and writing than his management-focused role at Failbetter.[2]Cultist Simulator represented the studio's first game and an experimental title that they could produce quickly with minimal costs.[1]Humble Bundle published the game.[3]

The use of card-driven narrative systems was already something Kennedy was familiar with through Fallen London. Kennedy said that a card-based approach helped to make concepts tangible and allowed for players to organize the cards as they saw best fit.[1]Cultist Simulator represented the most minimalist take Kennedy could take with the card-based concept, since cards represented a vast vocabulary of terms within the game.[1] While Kennedy provided user interface elements to help the player understand where to place cards, much of the strategy and reasoning was something he wanted players to discover for themselves. Kennedy did this to both mimic crafting systems in other role-playing games, and to create the Lovecraftian feel to the game. Kennedy said the player 'will be able to mesh together an understanding of this very deep, very complicated lore in the same way that the scholars of Lovecraft are actually doing in fiction.'[1]

Kennedy announced the project in September 2016, providing a free simplified web-driven version of how the game would play, and with plans to use Kickstarter to raise funds for an anticipated October 2017 release date.[4] Kennedy launched the Kickstarter in September 2017 and pushed the release date into May 2018; the Kickstarted succeeded in obtaining GB£82,000 of its target GB£30,000 fundraising goal.[5] The game was released on 31 May 2018 for Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Linux systems.[6]

Kennedy plans to be able to extend Cultist Simulator through downloadable content following the Paradox Interactive model.[1] The first such content, 'The Dancer', was released on 16 October 2018.[7] A free update released on 22 January 2019 includes an extended end-game, where the player is challenged to take their successful cult leader and elevate them into a godlike state.[8][9] Two additional DLC packs, 'Priest' and 'Ghoul' were released in May 2019, alongside the Cultist Simulator: Anthology Edition which includes the game and all DLC content in a single package.[10][11]

Ports for iOS and Android have been developed by Playdigious and released in the second quarter of 2019.[12]

Cultist Simulator received 'mixed or average reviews' from professional critics at launch.[13]

According to Alexis Kennedy, Cultist Simulator's sales surpassed 35,000 units within six days of release, which caused the game to break even and generate a profit in its first week. Its sales were similar in volume to those of Sunless Sea over the same period.[16]
